Stage 13 is the start of the return ...

Earlier this morning I left Tuktoyaktuk to return to Inuvik where I arrived 90 mins ago. After checking in, making lunch, I now have to get ready for dog sledding :)

My way so far ...

Here is my bread crumbs trail from Campbell, CA, USA to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, Canada.
And, yes, I can drive over water ;o)
But I am still working on turning water into wine ...

Pictures from Stage 12

Driving on ice is sometimes really scary!
But today ... it was fun!
Have you drifted lately in your BMW X5 sideways ...?

Stage 12 - The Ice Highway

Stage 12 shall lead me today over water to Tuktoyaktuk ... Yes, over frozen water! The MacKenzie River is converted in Winter (and fall and spring) to a road - ice highway - to connect Inuvik to Tuk! In summer, there is no street connection ...

Stage 11 - the Dempster Part II/II complete

Stage 11 ended today eventful in Inuvik, NWT!
With an additional overnight stay at Eagle Plains, the road opened today again ... but not for long! But one after the other ...
Event 1: the road opened and I did not noticed it! I was in my room and all of a sudden I noticed it was so quiet ... Well everybody was gone! Less one - he was also sleeping in his room ...
Event 2: the Arctic Circle Crossing! The parking at the AC was not cleared, so I took a risk pulling in Nd I was awarded with sun shine for my photo shoot!
Event 3: White Out! All of you know that I am not shy when it comes to speed ;) but today, I was partially crawling!!! Passing thru - what is called by the truckers - the alley of hurricanes the cross wind was sooo strong that the snow took all the visibility! The road was gone! Just trying to see from one road marker to the next ... Sometimes I even stopped !!!
Event 4: while still in the alley of hurricanes all of the sudden there was a truck in the same direction as I was driving, but way to the left ... Actually, so far left that he was in the ditch - stuck! I stopped and tried to help him putting on his chains ... At -18C and cross winds of up to 50km/h!!! My specifically bought new shuffle for such purposes worked great! Although, we were not able to free him, so he called for the big cavalry and I was back on my way! So far, all my gear is working wonderfully! Even there I was not cold! Well - other than my nose!
Event 5: 5 min after leaving the trucker, the most wonderful sunshine came out again and no wind!
Event 6: there is a race from Eagle Plains to Tuk ... on FOOT! It is just approx. 350 miles! Those folks walk in this cold and pull a sledge with their stuff ... Did anybody called me crazy by driving up here? Well we have another level of craziness than for those athletes!

What a drive!
